Pastor’s Corner Pastor Yip
“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work.
Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone?
Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” Eccl 4:9, 11-12
This passage brings out the importance of having co-laborers working together as a team. As our church becomes more multi-congregational with a diversity of languages and cultures I am more convinced that only a team of pastoral staff with diverse backgrounds and gifts working in unity of heart and purpose can meet the needs and lead the church to grow spiritually. I am very thankful that the Lord has brought such a team together in our church. Not only do we serve together, we also eat together (very important!) and share and laugh together. This teamwork has led me to reconsider my role of being the senior pastor. Traditionally a senior pastor is regarded as a CEO with the other pastoral staff working under him and for him. There are strengths and weaknesses in this model; but we the pastoral staff are not working in this way. So after a prolonged time of prayerful consideration I want to clarify my role as that of a team leader of the pastoral staff rather than as the CEO-type of senior pastor. As a team we make decisions on major issues together. We emphasize open communication, participation, and shared leadership. Each staff is accountable not to me but to the whole team and to the church through the Board. Consequently my job description is as follows:
1. Be the team leader of the pastoral staff and coordinate the whole ministry of the church.
2. Mentor and develop the pastoral staff.
3. Preach and teach.
Furthermore, in order to devote more time to mission my ministry for the church will be cut to 2/3 full-time as of September this year.
On a more personal note, as my son goes to university Mrs. Yip and I have moved from a house to an apartment so as to escape the drudgery of shuffling snow and mowing the lawn. What a relief!
Staff News

Oliver Gan, the Mandarin intern, will also leave us in September after a faithful ministry in preaching, teaching, and among the young people.
